History
Louis XIII is a tribute to the French King Louis XIII who was the reigning king when the Rémy Martin family established themselves in the Cognac region in France in the 1620s. He was the first monarch to recognize Cognac as a category in its own right. The House of Rémy Martin was established in the Cognac region of France in 1724, and the first decanter of Louis XIII was created in 1874, leaving a 144 year legacy.
Cognac
Louis XIII is crafted from Ugni Blanc grapes, sourced exclusively from Grande Champagne, the most prestigious cru, in the heart of Cognac. The Cognac region is located in the central-southwest coast of France, just north of Bordeaux. Louis XIII is a complex blend of up to 1,2000 different eaux-de-vie (water of life in French), which are the unaged distillate from the grapes. The youngest eaux-de-vie in the Louis XIII blend is 40 years old, with the oldest being 100 years old. After double distillation in small copper pot stills, the eaux-de-vie are aged in century-old barrels called, Tierçons. Tierçon barrels are themselves 150-200 years old and require consistent repair and maintenance. No other cognac house owns as many Tierçons as the House of Rémy Martin. Tierçons are crafted from Limousin French oak, taken from the Limousin forest in Central France, and is the wood of choice for Louis XIII, because of its generous tannins and very fine walls. The Cellar Master, Baptiste Loiseau, will inspect and sample each cask every year, judging the evolution with an expert nose and selecting certain casks to be blended with certain others to ensure the most aroma, complex flavors, and outstanding finish. The blending process is a precise art, painstakingly and continually blending older casks with younger ones to produce to achieve the perfect balance of flavor and richness that defines the brand. The aging eaux-de-vie that will eventually become Louis XIII has been overseen by three generations of Cellar Masters spanning a century.
Decanter
The iconic decanter owes its inspiration to a metal flask from the Battle of Jarnac in 1569, which was found near the Rémy Martin estate. Each crystal decanter is meticulously handcrafted and individually numbered by 11 master glass men from the House of Baccarat in Paris. Finally, the neck is decorated with a 20-carat gold, a genuine work of art in crystal and gold. No two Louis XIII decanters are ever exactly the same.
