Slane Irish Whiskey

“The reason is that I grew up admiring Irish whiskeys that had a sherry influence in them. So we went out to Spain, myself and Brown-Forman, and we found an Oloroso sherry producer that also builds their own barrels. The Oloroso sherry sits in that barrel for two years. The sherry stays with them in Spain. They sell that. We ship the barrel to Ireland and then put some of the whiskey into it. And even with a few months in that barrel it already acquires some lovely dark fruit raisin notes and maybe a little brown spice. And it’s added a lot of body and complexity to the liquid.”
— Alex Conyngham

History

The story of Slane™ Irish Whiskey begins with the famous Slane Castle. The castle, located in the Boyne Valley, has been the home of the Conyngham family since 1703, and is one of the world’s most famous live music venues, since 1981. Alex Conyngham, co-found and Global Brand Ambassador for Slane, spent much of his early young in the historic castle. Alex, a founding member of the Irish Whiskey Association, was a brand ambassador for another Irish whiskey brand in Australia, but he returned to Ireland in 2008, to develop and launch the Slane Castle Irish Whiskey with his father Henry. After two years of careful construction and renovation, the original stable block of Slane Castle is now the location of the distillery. Brown Forman bought the brand in 2015.

Grain

Slane™ is composed with a combination of tasted gain and estate grown malt. The estate is now more than 1,500 acres and on that we grow about 2,000 tons of barley a year. Obviously barely is one of the raw materials for making whiskey. That was one of the reasons we got into the business.

Water

The primary water source is the River Boyne, but the distillery also has access to an estate well.

Distillation Process

Slane™ is 2x distilled in a Column Still, with no Pot Still Whiskey.

Maturation

Slane™ has unique signature triple-cask aging process. The first barrel used is a virgin barrel, with a medium char, and heavy toast, which was hand crafted at the Brown Forman Cooperage in Louisville, Kentucky. Next, the second barrel used is a seasoned Ex-Tennessee Whiskey or Ex-Kentucky Bourbon barrel, which was also produced at the Brown Forman Cooperage. It is safe to assume that this barrel, held at one time, Jack Daniel’s® Tennessee Whiskey or Woodford Reserve® Bourbon. Finally, the third barrel used is a used Ex-Oloroso Sherry cask from Jerez, Spain. The contents of all three barrels are carefully mingled together, to create a consistent and unique whiskey.

Produced in Slane Ireland, Slane Irish Whiskey is aged using our signature 'Tripled Casked' method. This involves resting our Grain and Malt whiskies between three different cask types; Virgin Oak, Seasoned Oak and Oloroso Sherry. These casks are then blended to create an exceptionally rich, smooth Irish whiskey. This whiskey is our testament to the character of the people of Slane and to all those who take pride in building their own legacy.
